Our lives are so busy that sitting down and readin

Our lives are so busy that sitting down and reading a book may be possible before bed. However, finding multiple opportunities throughout the day may be challenging.

These quick five-minute activities can help incorporate literacy learning into our busy days!

 Sing a nursery rhyme:
Twinkle Twinkle Litte Star, Wheels on the bus OR create a song. Sometimes it’s more fun to make up your own words while using the tune to a famous nursery rhyme. If you don't know the lyrics then play the song (Audio only to make sure the learning opportunity is focused on you two only) and learn the words together.

 Tell a story while driving using the people, buildings, landscapes, and weather as props.

Your story does not have to be elaborate. It can be silly and your child may just listen and laugh, follow along by looking at the item you point to and incorporate into the story or they may join in and add to the story. An example of this would be driving while it’s raining and seeing a man with an umbrella. You may say, the man in the red jacket forgot his umbrella. He had to run to his grandmother's house to borrow her blue umbrella. Now, he can walk to pick up his dog from dance class. (Insert giggling together because of the silliness of a dog and a dance class)

 Sing a song while they are washing their hands

This is one of my favorites to do with my kiddos. Singing the ABCs is a quick and easy song as well as fun to write in the soap, if able, to show them the letters as you’re singing about.

 Tell them a story about you from childhood about your favorite toy, character or something you enjoyed.

You can make this up if you need to or retell one of their favorite shows as a story. For example, if they watched an episode of Bluey before bath time you can create a story about Bluey and your child’s favorite toy.

 Have your child retell their favorite story (Try to only be a listener)

This is hard for us as adults to only be a listener. However, you can use one of their favorite stories or books and ask them about it. Don’t worry about correcting them or adding anything to what they are saying. Just listen:)

In the first years of life (even in utero!) children are beginning to listen to sounds in their environment and learning what sounds they prefer. Exposing even infants to the sounds/intonation of the languages you/your family may speak begins to shape their sound preferences. Here's an example: an infant will hear their caregivers speaking regularly and when they hear other people speaking around them outside of the home their brain will attend to the sounds and intonation of the "language" they have heard most frequently and reinforce their learning of those sounds.

For this reason, expose your infant/young child to sounds of multiple languages to encourage their brains to attend to sounds/intonations of other languages. If your family only speaks one language you can teach your children to appreciate other languages and learn a few words together (a fun language-learning activity you can do as a family!)

Here are a few examples:
-Use bilingual children's book
-Listen to the audio version in another language
together by watching a YouTube video with visuals so you know when to turn the page:) Or, sometimes the words are simple enough for you to know when to turn the page on your own - you can use the audio-only version to learn pronunciation/intonation/etc.

Set one goal: Learning one word you both say together or simply having the goal of appreciating the multilingual literacy activity together.

Take 10 seconds, and set a timer, if you need to,

Take 10 seconds, and set a timer, if you need to, to savor this moment with your little one(s). It may be a chaotic moment or a moment of peace. The dishes can wait, laundry will always be there, and everyone is always hungry...so take these 10 seconds to be in the moment and savor it. Whatever that means to you right now.
